Antique Sterling Silver Art Nouveau Galt Brothers Gravy Serving Porringer Bowl & Underplate, 1879

This marvelous Art Nouveau style bowl and plate is created in gorgeous floral and swirls repousse sterling silver and was produced by M.W. Galt Brothers & Company of Washington DC circa 1879-1892. This lovely pair can be used as a child’s porringer which were historically given as a christening gift or as a bowl and plate to be used for serving sauces and gravies. In addition to the floral and swirls repousse, the bowl and plate edges are refined with a scrolled edge. This beautiful bowl sits on a graduated pedestal base. Both pieces are engraved in script with RCN. Hallmarks are: under plate: M.W. Galt.Bro & Co, Sterling, Fleur de lis within a shield and the number 7. Bowl: Fleur de lis in a shield, Sterling. Measurements for these fabulous creations are: Bowl Diameter=5-1/8 inches, Height from top to bottom=2-5/8 inches. Depth=2-5/8 inches, Underplate diameter=6-1/4 inches, Height=1/2 inch. Weight=21.70 Troy ounces. This marvelous Art Nouveau style bowl and underplate have been well cared for, gently used and are in excellent antique condition, free from cracks and repairs. There is light surface scratching on the bottom of the bowl and top of the plate where bowl and plate would have touched, commensurate with age and use, but they do not diminish the beauty of this delightful pair. The underside of the plate also has surface scratching. The underside of the bowl is engraved with the initials RCN and the top side of the plate with the same initials. This beautiful set can be given as a christening gift or used as a sauce serving bowl with underplate, particularly if you want to bring the Art Nouveau design to your table!
